Darn Expiring Domain

February 14th, 2008 by Hendra

I learned that in order to quickly get traffic one could buy an expiring domain from several domain registar available.Other reason why i wanted to buy expire domain is, because i heard that people sometime got lucky and snap a very good name for their business out there

After doing some review on article provided by my plr provider, plrpro, i then do some keyword research with nichebot and keywordcountry, which i think better than wordtracker.

My first place to find expire domain was tdnam aka godaddy.com’s expire domain service. It doesn’t come cheap, i have to pay $4.5 to be able to join the auction

I found one of the site sold there got aprox 1200 traffics monthly. Moreover, what surprise me is, it has google page rank of 4 and got a lot of backlinks from several PR4 to PR2 websites.

Than my heard beat even faster, i saw it offered as cheap as$10!! So there i put my bid in haste. My eyes start rolling thinking and imaginating what i could do with such a great domain name.

I am so anxious, it made me check the bidding price every hour. I am so happy that there was no one bid on it. Maybe I guess, hey, it must be my lucky day!! Nobody interest enough on this domain or they don’t do such a dilligent search like i am, to know what jewel this domain is.

I wondered, what i could do with such good domain, offer it as link exchange site and charge some good money on it, link it for free to my next satellite websites, and many more.

And as you probably guess, the party is over, less than an hour i win the bid, some one went in, bidding $30..

Oh dear, i guess i have to move my bid a bid more… but i’ll wait, i won’t give my bid till the last minute.

And all went mess for me, and that $30 guy too i think. Someone put a devastating $250 bid!! How on earth i am going to follow his bid i think….

My hand was going to follow the bid up, than i realize i don’t have any experience on this matter, if i win, what i am going to do with that domain name??

So, here i am, with a broken heart, going home empty handed. I guess i have move on and try find another domain for my topics T_T

Basic how to’s to make niche blog

February 11th, 2008 by Hendra

In my previous post, i listed 5 blog whose primarily topic on making money online.

As i wrote, Caroline’s blog gave me so much inspirations. She also gave me basic information about niche blog. I have heard a lot of times people write about niche, but none took my attention as caroline did.

Reading through some of her post, i gain more clear perspective on niche blog from a different angle compare than what i have learnt.

What is niche? you might ask. Google provide a lot of niche definitions, i’ll put up definitions best related with my current post here :

“Term referring to a specialized target market characterized by a particular interest, topic or subject. Niches are usually potentially profitable, but depend an inordinate amount on the loyalty of the audience to whom it is catering.” www.iuniverse.com/how-we-work/terms.htm

“Niche Marketing can refer to both marketing and business choice. In and of itself, niche marketing refers to finding a segment of the general market for a service or product line. One then develops a solution for the needs of that segment and then markets to it to get the word out.” http://www.marketingtitan.com/what_is_niche_marketing

Caroline gave away an e-book with basic information how to setup a niche blog. and i found it really easy to understand and very use full for anyone new to blog, wordpress and niche blog.

What i have to do to make a niche blog? To make it easy, there is few basic step i compact into these six step :

  • Find topics, it could be what you like about or what you master already, could also topic about something that you don’t really knew before, i’ll talk about it later.
  • Research whether that topic searched by many people in search engine, why, because basic of niche blog is free trafic from search engine. Yes you can get traffic from another way. If you want, you could also buy link or build traffic from pay per click advertising or any other advertising, but i, i’d prefer free traffic
  • Setup a wordpress installation
  • Design your wordpress installation as it is a website, not a blog. What i am talking here, you have to ELIMINATE all things that made your wordpress installation looks like blogs.
  • Post your niche topics everyday or in a certain period. One post in 2-3 days prefered.
  • Put up google adsense, put up anything that can make money, including every affiliates programs you find related to your blog

That’s what i can remember for the moment. I’ll put on more indepth post about points stated above next time.

What i am doing now

Actually i made promise to myself that i will post whatever progress i have made in my effort making money online everyday. So i can review and learn what i have done, and probably my reader can learn from path i took and took benefit from it. But overwhelming information that need to put into action and lack of time made me not making any post.

Most of my time currently concentrated on my way making my first niche blog. I am planning to make at least two niche blog online before the end of this february. Wish me luck :D

My last blog was about how i found out that blog was not meant just for fun, but could also be use for making money online.I previously mentioned that in my endeavour learning money making from internet, i tried to focus learning from some blog and website only, rather than pushing my self to swallow every information i found.

It is hard to swallow everything in a limited time (hei, i got to take care my real business to here). I also think its in-efficient effort to read on too many resources without actually put into practice what i had learned.

Talking about efficiency in my learning effort, now i am not visiting too many blog/websites like i used to do, instead i try to focus only on blog/websites i already had in my bookmarks.

Among bookmarks i had, there are group of blog that i found very special. They teach how to make money from basic to advance blogger. They are :

Copyblogger, i think every blogger should subscribe to their feeds. You could learn many new things from them. How to write a good blog and how to make a compelling blog post.

Problogger, this blog made by Darren Rowse is a good starting place for everybody who wants to make a better blog and want to know more how blog could give you decent even great earning.

JohnChow.com and ShoeMoney.com offer more deep technique on making money online, they also give information more on how to make money from blog. That you can get money not just from adsense, but also few other options available on the net.

Last but not least, recently i add new favourite feed into my feereader, it is caroline-middlebrook’s blog.

At the moment, I read more feeds from her blog rather than other mentioned earlier.

Why i like her blog? There are some reasons :

  • She wrote in a very easy language to understand, with a compelling tone.
  • She able to describe what she got in mind very clearly, it was like she is talking to me via her post.
  • She share a great deal of information about how she make money online step by step. Which is very powefull for someone like me, who doesn’t know anything about it before.
  • In my opinion, her true story about someone who quit their day job looking for a way working online is a great attraction to me and anybody who use internet and blogging.

It is everybody’s dream to quit work and make a living from internet. Seeing and following story of someone whose struggle from zero to success on internet is more compelling rather than learning and reading from someone who already there making few digits of money.

I saw caroline has gain significant amount of audience in very short time compared to other blogs i know. How she did that? I think it might related with people like watching reality shows, and following caroline’s blog is just like watching reality show to them :D

From Blog for fun to Blog for money

My journey to learn more about blogging and the blogoshphere (blog world) have stumbled me to many great blog whose giving so many tips and idea how to make a better blog.

Rather than discussing how to make a good blog, many of those blogs i found are, focussing on topics how to make money online, especially from blogging. Make real money in a great sum.

This “money” theme ring a gong in my head. I mean, how on earth people could make money just by writing article on topics they like (well, not really “just write”, so much effort and idea also poured on the article). How could they do that? Questions rolls in my head, and there i go trying to find more truth.

Make money online, how did i got the idea?

First time i found make money online topics was from Problogger.com It was all a coincidence. I knew Problogger from googling around to find resource on blogging.

Problogger than lead me to JohnChow.Com than lead me to ShoeMoney.com and so on. Those three name are well known in “making money online” community. Especially for their past success on getting ridiculous amount of money google send to them for google’s adsense programs. Not just that paycheck, actually they also dedicated their time to work on their blog so many people could also learn how to make money online.

My learning progress

Since knowing making money blogs, especially those i mentioned earlier, I then look for more and read even more pages, bookmarking and saving more sites like i will ever have time to read and check all of them later on.

Which later realized, that i don’t have much time for it.

I also learnt from hundreds of free ebooks provided in the internet, which are so easy to get these days. You just need to google it… Tons of them prepared for you to download and read.

Finding time to read is the hardest part to do, so i just scan read some of them, read through it, if it worth my time.

Realizing that time is limited and browsing around finding information without doing anything with knowledge i had is just waste of time, i focused on only read through few sites only.

Later on i learnt about feeds, then i subscribed to just ‘money making theme feed that made my learning effort more organized and focused. More over, i sorted and unsubscribe feeds that i feel not good enough. I also pick and print just some ebook that made me interest enough. Ebooks that have decent quality and many people recommend for it.

My notes to you, if you are looking for “making money guru’s” blog and save their page and search and bookmark and so on everytime you find one, just like what i did, you will find that hundreds of blogs gurus out there had almost the same topics idea posted by another “gurus”.

What make them different is, just how they rewrite the topics and when they post it. Reading each of these writing won’t give you any different. Believe me, i found many blogs that got the same idea packed in different flavour.

That’s why I though, wouldn’t it better to subscribe just few feeds whose already got a lot of readers and established?

Focus and The Pareto Law

The Pareto Law (aka the 80/20 law) said that 20% of our effort will lead us to 80% of our result. Pareto law made me subscribe to just 5 of my favorite “gurus” feed. Than omit another 20 or so feed subscribei already subscribed on. Of course you can have your own estimation how many feed you should subscribe, it all depends on

  • Do you have the time to read all of them? (what’s the point subscribe to the feeds but don’t have time to read?)
  • Do reading more article will make you much more different in any efficient way?

In the future, if i found better blog feed to be subscribed into. I’ll omit the least read feed i had, because that will give me more focus and chance of success.

Oh, about this FOCUS word, i remember Bruce Lee, yeah the KungFu master, once said, “A great fighter is an ordinary man with a LASER FOCUS”, so, learn specific KungFu technique and mastering one, will give better result than MASTERING none. (correct me if i am wrong)

Applied to this feed subscribing, i’d rather to learn from few “gurus” but reap full knowledge from them, rather than learn from a lot of “gurus” and later made my self dizzy with tons of informations.

On Jan 27th i visited THC’s blog like i used to do almost everyday. I discovered new tools that could be used to edit a blog content and (possibly) increase bloggers productivity. There is 7 tools reviewed, i downloaded and tried two of them right away.

Windows Live Writer and Qumana are my choice, because beautiful interface i saw in them. I always have a gig on new software, especially freewares so i though this shinny little software might do something good for me :D

Livewritter got the first honor to be installed. Unfortunately after finishing the installation, the login process didn’t went well. There is problem with the xmlprc file that made me face the “Error 500: Internal Server Error”.

I though it was the Livewritter’s problem, than i found out Qumana installation also gave me the same problem. Then i post some question back in THC’s blog asking about problem i faced.

Solution’s given by Sueblimely in THC’s blog gave me hints how this might be fixed and also a link to MindTweaks website where i might could find sollution for this lil problem. MindTweaks solution’s can be found here

All of three first methods mentioned which are : change my theme to default theme, deactivate all the plugins and even delete any unused spaces found in xml file didn’t help. So i conclude there must be something wrong with the server.
Finally I opened a ticket and continue coresponding via e-mail with THC’s technicall support, below are part of our conversation

Hi, i tried using qumana blog writer today. I found a solution in thc blog, that i have to modify the xmlprc file in my blog folder. I found this error when i try to access the file : Error 500: Internal Server Error.

Good day Hendra,

You are in a shared server and very secured for all of our customers. The number one method hackers gain access to servers in the past two years has been through web-based injection attacks.

The applications which are most vulnerable (not a complete list, but given in order of vulnerability) include Wordpress, Joomla, Mambo, phpBB, and phpNuke.

One of the methods the attackers uses is XML RPC for which the mod_security rule is enabled.
For now, it is not in our plan to change this parameter for all the reasons mentionned above.

Well, honestly i was dissapointed that i could not use these softwares for my blogging activity. I really want to try and experience those blog editor’s capability.

It seems we, THC’s user have to wait a while until the security problem with XML RPC mentioned above solved… When? I don’t know.

How ever, I fully understood that THC,is doing this to protect me, us, their user, from any security problem might happen.

For now, i guess i have to suffice my self with WordPress’s internal editor.

Do you face the same problem? Do you have any other solution or technique that i could probably use? Please leave comments here, help will be much appreciate!!
